Who is Alan Newton
Over 25 years of leadership experience across event agency, hotels / hospitality, and technology sectors, I've been the buyer, the vendor, and the advisor.
I started my journey in the events industry with Zibrant, where I led the expansion of the commercial / procurement team as Head of Department, taking responsibility for all hotel & venue relationships, annual client rate negotiations, agency-hotel commercial agreements, leading venue knowledge development programmes, and strategic client meetings and events programme development as a Strategic Meetings Management Programme (SMMP) expert, for clients such as Barclays, EY, Centrica, and BP.
My team and I co-developed an industry 1st agency-hotel supplier appraisal process to rank hotel groups across a set of metrics that were developed in recognition of the key requirements of our agency client portfolio and the commercial needs of the business. This helped improved client meeting & events programme value, client service delivery, overall company profitability, and competitiveness, recognised as one of the Top 3 venue sourcing (events) agencies in Europe.
During this time I expanded the number of UK hotel advisory boards I contributed to, including Hilton, IHG, Marriott, Jumeirah, and Principal Hayley Hotels, before moving to Grass Roots Eventcom as their first ‘group employee’ leading Global Supply Chain Management. My role was to bring Best-In-Class global supply chain to the organisation, sitting on the management board of the venue procurement division (previously Hotel Brokers International), leading the consolidation of client meetings management programme, acting as a centre for industry knowledge and researching technological innovations & solutions.
During my event agency years, I spearheaded transformative initiatives, including achieving triple-digit growth in commercial revenue, consistently exceeding revenue targets, and developing an industry-leading supplier appraisal process that drove operational transformation, risk mitigation, and client-agency value adds. The efforts of my team and I fostered deeper supplier engagement globally, delivering enhanced performance and bottom-line revenue growth.
I graduated from Hult International Business School in London with an MBA and a Certificate in Global Leadership (Organisational Leadership), providing me with a combination of theoretical expertise and practical experience.
As a startup founder and COO, I successfully scaled a high-growth tech company to over £5M in sales revenue over 11 years, securing a place in the prestigious Silicon Valley Comes to the UK (SVC2UK) "50 Highest-Growth Startups in the UK 2020". This achievement was realised with less than £900K in external funding, a testament to strategic vision, operational expertise, and relentless determination.
